God's Word in Action
The impact of your partnership in China
She thought she wasn't good enough to be loved by God. Then she received a Bible, and learned the power of prayer and understanding.
“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”
— 1 Timothy 2:1-4
I feel more peaceful now
How many of us feel like we’re failing God because we aren’t perfect? That’s how Sister May felt—imperfect, and afraid that she was not good enough to be loved by Him.
For 14 years, she struggled with her faith, unable to shake the shame of being different. “Since I was young, I’ve felt inferior because I do not have a front tooth,” she explains. “My classmates would tease me, which made me angry and sad. I grew up to be a person of few words. Perhaps, because of this, I did not even know how to get close with God.”
Sister May first accepted Christ at age seven. From that time on, she says, her mother always told her to pray. “However, I would fall to sleep after a few words of prayer. Mother would say to be a doer and not a hearer only, so I always felt that if I did not depend on God, I would be sifted away like wheat. I always wondered what wrong I had done to inhibit my growth.” May explains.
And she wondered why her mother always prayed for relatives, friends, church, and China. “I didn't understand why. I thought it was sufficient that I believed, why did we need to pray so much?” she recalls.
Then a Bible League-trained Christian gave Sister May her own Bible to read and study. For the first time, God's Word spoke to her heart, especially a passage from 1 Timothy, which says that living peaceful and quiet lives is good.
“I learned that God even loves and accepts my quietness,” Sister May says. “The Bible teaches me not to be jealous or envious, but to love others. I prayed that He would take away my jealousy. God listened to my prayer and took away my jealous heart. I feel more peaceful now.
“Now I will trust the Lord to guide me in my life, and I thank God that He gave us Jesus Christ so that we can understand His Word better.”
