The impact of your partnership in providing God’s Word in New Translations

“Thank you for supplying materials in Zapotec.”  - Pedro Lopez

 "I wanted to change, but I couldn't"

Pedro Lopez spent his early years working in the fields with his father. While his parents followed Mexico’s traditional religion, Pedro’s heart had become hardened to anything of a spiritual nature.

“When I was young, I remember seeing the other young people out having fun,” says Pedro. “I wanted to feel like them.” Pedro felt his parents’ rules were too restrictive. So he strayed, and found the “fun” that he saw others having.

That fun turned to addictions. Marijuana led to cocaine and soon Pedro was fighting the demons of addictions on an hourly basis.

In search for peace, Pedro met and married his wife. “But the addictions continued,” he says, “and we fought all the time.”

As the tension between Pedro and his wife increased, so did his drug usage. “She tolerated me,” he says. “I wanted to change, but I couldn’t.”  Pedro started to have constant nose bleeds from the cocaine usage. “I got scared,” he remembers. “I thought I could die.”

One day a friend told Pedro that his life could be different. “My friend said that Jesus could help me with my problems.”

Pedro’s friend, a Bible League-trained believer, gave him a copy of the Gospel of John to read. And unlike other reading materials Pedro had been given, this was written in Zapotec, Pedro’s heart language.

Today, Pedro’s life looks very different than before he met Christ through the Bible study with his friend.

Pedro is thankful for his friends from the Bible League who cared about him. “They made the effort to show me the Word of God,” he says. “You helped me grow spiritually with the Bible studies.”

And today, Pedro’s family is united in their faith and service to Jesus. “Now I am very happy; I wouldn’t change anything,” he says. “Today I can say as Joshua did, ‘As for me and my house, we serve the Lord.’”
